Kennedy seen as model for re-entry women

advertisement

The bid by Caroline Kennedy for the Senate has reignited the "mommy wars" between mothers with careers and those who take a break from paid employment.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Of course parents wanting to re-enter the workforce should be able to do so without scrutiny from those who did not wish to rear children or be stay home parents for a time.  The difference here is that Kennedy is not the most qualified person in the state of New York to be "handed" a seat in senate.  That is ludicrous.  This person obviously doesn't need the position but may be handed it as a family heirloom or right of passage based on who her family is or was.  The constituents of the open seat deserve someone that can get in and serve them best not warm a seat until another election.  With the country in the state that it is in, wouldn't a person with better credentials be more deserving whether they have worked their whole life or spent time raising children?

AT 50 she wants into modern politics, she should FIRST see a head shrinker, and get her 2 P's sorted, as our British cousins would advise. Where is her husband in ALL this? Become NY state senator, now that's a real logical conclusion to a real logical KENNEDY? They ALL love and expect gifts, served right on their plates.

You really asked "Where is her Husband in all of this?" If he is worth his salt he is standing beside her as her greatest advocate. As any good Husband should do.

I'm not advocating Mrs. Kennedy on a personal level but, this particular argument is ridiculous on both sides.

Having nannies care for your children while you meet your social obligations hardly equates to the experience of most stay at home moms.

The benefit of those nannies and house staff do however, afford her the opportunity to have had a rich experience in fund raising, on a grand scale, and non-paid public pursuits that are necessary in our communities. Using her experience in raising funds for schools systems as an example, most would be marginal at best without the solicitation of donations and grants. Most would not function with any transparency if parents were not active in the PTA or volunteering in classrooms or assisting teachers in menial aspects of their jobs.

Women who choose to stay home and raise their children do not just curly up and become couch potatoes or shopaholics, they tend to use the skills from their working days to promote other endeavors for no pay. If others are jealous that there are qualified and ambitious women in this world that do eventually re-enter the workforce then that is their problem.

Mr. Bus could you expand on your objections is it because she is 50 or because you see no value in a person who places their family before career?

There is a tremendous difference between an intelligent, experienced, compassionate woman like Ms. Kennedy vs. a woman who is manipulative, ignorant, and a very poor mother/role model - Ms. Palin. There can be no comparison...even on the mother/family level.

Face it. Ms. Palin never read a book and certainly could never write a book...but there will be books written about her as one of the most inept, ignorant public figures - remember Dan Quail?

Fisherman... can you stay on topic? Article is about a socialite mom choosing to re-join the working world. It is not about a working mom politician.

Where you might be just that sexist to link the two it would only be due to limited personal knowledge about the topic. In which case, you could consider developing your own opinion not spouting old DNC rhetoric. I suppose if you can identify with Governor Palin so well you would consider picking up a book yourself and possibly challenging your own limits to intellect.

I see that someone has already asked the question: where is Ed Schlossberg in all this? If this were anyone else, the press would have mentioned her husband as well as her children.

Is there anyone out there better qualified than Ms Kennedy? She has the contacts. She'd be great at networking.

Are there any better qualified ?........................ She has contacts ? .................... She'd be great networking ?........................

This really is a question and subjuct that is for New Yorkers only. Yet since this is national news and the things she would do as a Senator from New York will have an effect on the rest of the country as a whole it is up for national debate.

Yes she is educated, qualified in many Americans view would probably mean years in a lower office at a state level, she doesn't have this, therefore ie; not qualified. If a person comes from a family that has 3 or for brain surgeons, that person does'nt become a brain surgeon by osmosis.

What kind of contacts,.............,,,,,, telephone numbers on speed dial for Sack's Fith Avenue, Tiffiny's and Uncle Teddy !!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish Caroline the best in persuing a career.

She just doesn't have the experience it takes to sit in a senate seat. Just because your father was president, and have a family history of politics and attended a law school aren't enough credentials. Based on all that, you don't ask to be appointed to the seat, you first run in an election to be voted for that position. It's obvious her resume is "Thin". Playing the "Mommy returning to work card" and " Pedigree card" is weak.

jm1 - Apparently you know the backgrounds of the current Senators. Many don't have previous political experience. One is a Medical Doctor. Others were 'community organizers'. There are teachers, economists, and a number of lawyers in that part of Congress.

You might even want to be a Senator, but I'm afraid you'd lose.

The difference with those current Senators who are MDs, teachers, etc, is  that they were elected.  Ms Kennedy will not be an elected official and as such the people are entitled to the best and most experienced representative - not a novice.

Anywho, TOOOOOO many out there think Ms. Kennedy is qualified for Senator, but did not find S.PALIN qualified for VP. Now that's a hoot. You also said she is manipulative and a poor mother/role model. OH, so you know her personally sir??? You need to wash out that mouth of yours with some soap and think before you malign someone. I truly believe that interview with Katie Couric pissed off Ms. Sara. Katie in my opinion was acting rather smug. Couldn't you see Sarah steaming underneath all that cool. She talked to her like she was stupid and frankly sir, you don't negotiate a multi-billion dollar deal if your stupid. That crack about her being a role model. FROM EXPERIENCE SIR, you can watch and guide your children the best you can in life. SOMETIMES stuff happens and all the MOTHERING OR FATHERING out there is not going to prevent ACCIDENTS from happening. Right after the press came out about her daughter and her plight, someone by the name of Suzanne Sommers came out with her OWN letter to the PRESS regarding her issue when she was a teenager. TO get to the point, she basically said DO NOT JUDGE ones actions. THINGS HAPPEN. And where do you get the manipulation factor from??????????Please state an example.

To those who says Caroline Kennedy have no experience.....have you considered the many years of experience George Bush has in politics? Look where we are now?

What Caroline Kennedy is bringing for the State of New York is integrity. See what happens when someone do not have integrity....look at Chicago's Governor.

I say Caroline Kennedy would be the best, she is not a politician. She is a person who have been doing good for the State of New York without the need to claim credit for herself.

Doesn't anyone realize that the Senate and House majority for the last two years was democratic and that's where the laws are passed. That's why we are where we are and it will get drastically worse. It already has because Obama isn't even in office yet and people who got him elected are already beating him up. Let's see how all three branches work together now that they're all Democrat.

Second: I don't believe there are many Kennedys with integrity or ethics. Doesn't anyone know how Joe came into his money, or JFK and his affairs of state or Uncle Teddy and Chappaquiddick?

Third: I've lived in New York State for nearly fifty years and Caroline Kennedy's extent to public service has been very limited at best. Sorry but she is out of touch with the working class, and after all isn't that who these clowns are supposed to be representing? Yes, I do know not many hold that philosophy anymore.

Who in the world is she like ????????????? Everyone knows that if a person has an address on Fifth Avenue, and was born with a, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond encrusted Spoon in your mouth that there is no way in Hades that she is like anyone else.

Hey it's great to be born into the lap of luxury, yet a name, does'nt entitle anyone to be a Senator. This is shameful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see SNL get into some skits that poke at Caroline Kennedy the way they did with that Palin woman, which clearly wasn't qualified to be President had McCain been elected and then died in office. Yet Palin was a billion times more qualified to be a Senator than this Kennedy woman.

All's fair when Liberals attack, come on SNL, lets see how completly one side you can be. At least this Palin woman was achieving her career while raising her family at the same time, Palin is much more of a woman, business person, and public servant the Caroline Kennedy !!!

Frankly, with all four of them running, she was the ONLY one holding an EXECUTIVE OFFICE. The MSM assassinated her in their papers and the same with most of our news programs. They never came up for air. AND who cares about SNL anyway. They poked fun at the GOV.of NY and the next day he was all over the airwaves complaining. It's never fair is it? Watch J. How is Caroline less qualified than Sonny Bono's wife? I have never understood how the wife of a politician is qualified to fill the position.

Caroline is college educated, has a law degree and has published several books about law. Just because she has children doesn't mean she isn't intelligent.

But that's something I don't think we will ever find out.

Rose, ................... I know you didn't just acuse me of using Crack............ Who TF do you think you are ? Lol !!!!

I admit I don't know his family's financial history, and it was an off the wall comment based on my beliefs as to what real estate costs in Hawaii, and the annual costs of living in Hawaii. I have money, yet not in the realm where I could live in Hawaii, and the costs are relative to the time period he was living there with his grandparents.

It was meant to make a point that he isn't a "working class person and never was", I guess everyone has they'er own definition of what working class is.

I would bet there are'nt to many people that would include any type of attorney in they'er definition of what working class is.

I have not heard about his college records, I read that he went to an Ivy league School thats it.

I'm not saying he was from a rich family, just wealthy enough to make his life into what it is today without doing any real, ....................... "working class" type of work.

The only people interested in this outdated "mommy wars" concept is the hysterical media which resurrect it every chance they get.  Who cares what people do with their careers?  Do what you need to help your family.  We each have a different path.    This discussion belongs back in the '70's with go-go boots.......

The fact is that anyone should come back into the workforce whenever they want.  Just don't expect to be placed at a level where all the people you graduated with are after they fought and clawed their way to get there for 30 years.  Come back to work but earn your stripes.  If you made the choice to stay home, that doesn't mean you learned a thing about your work.

Wisconsin Bob...are you really that shallow?

"If you made the choice to stay home, that doesn't mean you learned a thing about your work?"

What is your impression of a "Stay at home mom?" I can vouch for myself and my peers that business skills do not end when you choose to raise your own children. There are many facets of life that are honed between: Children, volunteer work, personal finance, interpersonal skills, negotiation, maintaining all the aspects of a home, logistics, entertainment, budgeting, entertaining, time management etc.

My husband and I often discuss the relief of life when I can go back to work at a company. The problem is there is no one who can walk into my home and do what I do with the same impact.

She has never held  job--9 to 5, fixed vacation, benefits, accountability, etc.  In common usage, a job, means outside the home employment.  Do not nitpick the definition of job.  The meaning of a, "job", is clear.

Anyhow--I sincerely doubt that she "took care" of her kids, without the help of other folks who had "jobs".  Namely,  taking care of her kids.

The article is obviously not considering staying home, raising kids as a profession otherwise the would not be calling it RE-entry.  The article is reffering to the outside of the home working world.

Oh no, divorced.  Just two weeks ago there was a big upraor because of a rumor that Palin was going to get divorced.  Why is that not okay (whihc it is neither okay nor true) and NO ONE is talking about this divorce?  Because it's okay to stand for no morals and not have them but it's not okay to stand for morals and make a mistake.  That's what the dems are all about - stand for nothing so they cannot be held to any standard.

Working class?  Just another elitist Dem with no no real concept of what the working class really even does in this country.  As for Ms. Kennedy - "re-entry" into what career?  She, like so many of the elitist ruling class has never had a real job!  Her ordination as a Senator would be just one more travesty in the political circus this country has been enduring for many, many years...

Why is it that we as a public believe that we should continue to diefy the Kennedy's with appointing one of their family members to a position of respect and power.  Who is pushing this woman on us and spinning the issue in favor of Ms Kennedy?  This is some sycophantic crap that makes us so endearing to the world.  This is no different than the Clintons expecting to be joint presidents or the Bush's running for every office in the land.  These silverspoon  fed familys' need to stay home and out of the public eye.  Bottom line is that if Ms Kennedy really wants the position, New york should hold a special election and let her run.   This is not about a woman coming back into the workforce.  This is annointing another Kennedy to carry the water for a liberal agenda and keep Hillary's hopes for a presidential run at bay.

If she will represent you and your needs, you must be a rich, dem with nothing to do.  Maybe you could get off teh internet and help some people out.  At least I will say the Princess looks like she may have done that.

fisherman 144 :  sara palin earned her job.  she went out on her own and got it.  she didnt whine that someone owed it to her because she has a famous name. I have tried to listen to what caroline is saying, but its very hard, because she cant speak well. in fact, she mumbles.  she is not like other mothers who want to enter or re-enter the workforce.  if they had a career, then they are of some value to their firms who want them back or, they have to go out and look for a job and thats not easy in today's economy.  they have to fight for a job. caroline isnt capable of doing that. she has hired an expensive firm to do that for her. and to remind people ad nauseum that she is a kennedy.

by the way, anne glusker of the washington post is either a fool, or a wannabe friend of caroline's. gee, maybe both.

We are one of only a hand full of counties left in the world that do not see women as leaders on the same scale as men.

That is the one area where we still see women treated as "to emotional to take a job like president". What a load of crap!!

We need a women to run this country and other counties. Then we would see progress, if the men worked with them not against them.

Most women work with common sense, not macho minds.

Though I agree with your premise-that a woman has every right to compete for any job a man has, I disagree with your 'only a handful' comment.  More than a handful of backwards countries don't let women hold high office-in fact, they don't let women drive, go to school, talk with any male not of their own family and the list goes on and on.

Much more than a handful, unfortunately.

She has all the qualifications she needs for both private sector work and the senate. She knows how to raise, nurture and deal with children. There are plenty of these in the work force and congress, "you know"

I wonder if the media will ask the types of questions about her family's background with the same consideration they asked another female political candidate, named Sarah Palin?  Even though she may be a nice person, let's see if "Katie" ask questions... such as Caroline,                                                                                                                             How do you feel about your grandfather Joe Kennedy's well known mafia friends?  What about how grandaddy made millions from selling illegal whiskey?  What about how his outspoken anti-semitic hatred of Jewish people?   What about your father JFK's ties to leading mafia figures?  What about your father cheating on your mother?  All those girlfriends & affairs?   Do you feel it was OK that your father & Uncle Bobby wiretapped Martin Luther King, Jr.?   Were you ever elected to be a Councilwoman?  Small town Mayor?  Governor? Ever run for or elected to anything?  With ZERO political experience, why should you be a US Senator?   The fact is, the idea that she is even being mentioned proves just "how stupid" the politicians "KNOW" voters really are!

The sins of the grandfather are not the sins of the granddaughter.

Plus, I think it's a good thing that she's a nubie. We need fresh people who aren't part of the 'good ol boy' club of politics with a capital P.  Any one should be able to run for a government position. I do think we should get to know what her positions are though and I think she should be elected and not given a position because she's a Kennedy.

Double standard???  Leslie Morgan Steiner, editor of the anthology "Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families," said "You have these incredibly talented stay-at-home moms, and I think we'd be idiots as a country not to welcome them back to the work place."  I do not remember this lady saying much about another working mom named Sarah Palin?

If I understand your post correctly, Sarah Palin technically doesn't qualify (I'm referring to the part after "incredibly talented"...I'll let others decide that!)

She already is a working Mom, so quitcher@!$%#in.

Don't waste your time trying to build up her image for her campaign. Caroline Kennedy will be the sweetheart of the media being "America's Princess from Camelot". She will do no wrong and is as good as seated.

Why not write about ALL the other women that are mothers and have been in the workplace for sixty-eight years since the Second World War. Politics is only one section of a vast pool of jobs were women play a vital role. This includes the house wives. Talk about the "Tail Wagging the Dog", there is no "mommy wars" other than in the minds of the editors.

She is no more qualified for this job than Palin was.  My argument for Palin was that she is an ordinary person and obviusly the "extraordinary" people can't give us what we expect so maybe she can.  I cannot give that same argument for the Princess - who could give that argument for anyone that has been known as a princess.  Therefore, I cannot support that woman as a senator.  We need people that understand our struggles in this economy.  We do not need people that have never and will never struggle in times like these or our voiuces will not be heard.

That being said, the lib media will not focus on her, her name will carry her through and we will have yet another "person of pedigree" in DC instead fo someone that is giong to look out for teh common American - which is what our government was supposed to accomplish.  The only way to change that is to rise up and say "enough".  This is not a right vs. left comment.  A lib will get the seat.  Let's make sure it's a dem that suports the people not another handout to a 30 year politician that bils us through the system and takes what shoudl be for all of us.

Qualified???  Qualified!!!!   Of course she is qualified.  For crying out loud, if the Democratic Party can get a fella into the President's slot who has spent about ..............hmmmmmmm let's see, 150 days active service as a state senator, then why wouldn't Ms. Caroline be considered qualified to be a state senator with all of her volunteer work.  Matter of fact, she raised three children, successfully I throw, so she has some excellent credentials for working in the senate.   Matter of fact, she and the President Elect could join together in some barn-storming sessions:

He, "Honored Madam Senator, what do you think we should do in this situation?"

                              She, "Gee Mr. President...."

He, "You may call me Barry."

She, "Aw gee Mr. President Barry."

                              He, "Just Barry will do."

She, "Oooooooooh!  Gee, Barry doo!  I have a few ideas.  Here's one......... let's try this and see what happens."

Joe Bidden, "Barry doo, I concur wholeheartedly."

He, "That's Mr. President to you!"

                              Hey!!!!   Couldn't houit!
