Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

But foodborne illness investigations can be very complicated, and it can take weeks or months for health officials to interview patients, find common links in what they ate, test suspected foods and come up with a clear-cut cause,

Hasn't it already been months since the outbreak according to the article? I still say that major changes need to happen at FDA and the Dept. of Agriculture. Forever reactive, hardly proactive.

How could the FDA possibly prevent these types of outbreaks; they can't be everywhere all the time......

THis is really strange because I myself was experiencing these symptoms throughout December and thought I might have some type of food poisoning but was too busy to do anything about it, then after a couple of weeks, the symptoms just went away. I actually just attributed it to the flu shot I had received.....I wonder it it's too late for me to be checked for Salmonella. What if the salmonella was in the flu shot; is that possible? Given how widespread this case seems to be maybe they should consider that.

FDA may not be able to be "everywhere" but I'm sure you wished that they'd been nearby when your flu shot was being concocted. Hm.

(I imagine that Salmonella could reproduce inside a vaccine as readily as an egg.)

I'm not sure it's agribusiness and big pharma, it may be an oversight.  I would be curious to see if there are wildlife preserves or an abundance of wildlife/birds near these manufacturers.  In Estes Park, Colorado, there was an outbreak of e-coli found to come from the overpopulation of elk.  In Alamosa, Colorado, the salmonella problem that forced people for a few weeks to boil their water resulted from the out of control bird population.  The CDC and the DOW need to work together to ensure our groundwater is safe and that wildlife, geese and other fowl are not somehow injecting parasites and salmonella into our food supply.  These herds and flocks must be trimmed -- I'm not sayin eradicated.  There are birth control methods available, plus the laws protecting some species are working against us not in overpopulation.
