Uproar In Maine Over Obama Assassination Sign

advertisement

Passions flared in a Maine town on Thursday over a sign in a store asking customers to place bets on an assassination of President-elect Barack Obama.

The Town Council in Standish condemned the sign on Thursday in a 6-0 vote and declared it reprehensible at a meeting where some residents defended the store owner, saying he had a right to free speech even if in bad taste, local authorities said.

"The town of Standish condemns in the strongest terms any such alleged activity calling for violence against any individual no matter their position, race or ethnicity," said the resolution posted on the town's website.

The sign in the Oak Hill General Store asked customers to place a $1 bet on the date of Obama's assassination, and said "Let's hope someone wins," the Portland Press Herald reported. It was called the "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool."

The store in the town of 9,285 people in southwest Maine has remained closed since reports of the sign appeared in the media on Sunday.

About 80 people attended the meeting, including some who defended the store owner, said town clerk Mary Chapman.

"There were folks on both sides of the issue," Chapman said in a telephone interview. "People were passionate of their opinion but very respectful of others."

Obama's historic election victory as the nation's first black president has sparked racist incidents nationwide, according to groups that monitor hate crimes.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The sign is despicable. I would even go so far as to say treasonous. It shouldn't be tolerated. (And wouldn't if it happened in the South).

When I showed this article to my boss pre-elect Obama all he could say was

"Well I'll be a monkeys uncle"

was the sign posted because of the 20 year anniversary?

what is meant by that is every twenty years an attempt has been made.

        These are exciting times.

Personally this is just the kind of change I'm looking for. Its better to get this stuff out in the open than letting it stew and simmer.

Lets all be honest instead of Politically correct, even if it hurts.

This is bigotry in it's most despicable costume. When was the last time anyone publically advocated the death of a President Elect? It does not matter if this is the first time or the one millionth time, if and when it has been said or written, each time it is or was wrong, period. The reason for the sign is obvious,  and some fools including those wishing to present themselves as being learned Constitution scholars, are attempting to make this a free speech issue. This stupidity is reprehensible, and has nothing to do with free speech. Yes a case can be made for this to be considered a constitutional prerogative, but at the very least, there is a moral and rational issue that is every bit as compelling as the right of a bigoted fool to advocate an unlawful act. Terrorist threats are punishable by law. Violation of a person's civil rights can get you a bid in the slams. To threaten the life of the President is a violation of the law. The President Elect is covered by this law. Those ambulance chasers that hope to make a name for themselves defending lost causes bring it on. How small is the mind that wants to kill someone that is no threat to their well being. How demented is the mind that advocates the death of those who don’t look like them, or disagree with them. To take another persons live for any reason is wrong. Including when this action is taken by the Government. Being a retired Police Officer, I have no problem using deadly force to effect a lawful objective, when, and only when, there is no viable alternative. Those of you who think it is funny, or justified, how would you feel if it had been you that was  targeted?. Or if some idiot placed your mother, son or daughter, in that pool? I suspect your attitude would be rather different. It is easy to be brave and stupid on paper, but if confronted with the situation where it is you that must suffer at the hands of some deranged individual, then the paradigm shifts, you now look for someone to rescue your dumb azz. I have not yet seen even the most racist piece of crap, refuse my offer of aid. I have seen the hate of some I have protected, I have even seen the resentment in the attitude and actions, when I have bailed others out of a bad situation. I can remember a week many  years ago when I saved the lives of three different men in three different incidents. One Black man, and two white men, one of whom was a police officer on his honeymoon, that had been slashed while attempting to negotiate the sale price of a hooker. Not one of them even thanked me. But I can also remember people that never stopped thanking me for assistance rendered. I can remember delivering a baby, on the floor of an apartment in the projects, I was never so scared, the paramedics laughed at me for being scared of this little baby. I can remember an old lady whose toilet flooded her apartment that embraced me for saving her few possessions. I can remember another old lady that would call once a month and claim to be having chest pains that seemed to know I was working, she only wanted someone to talk to her a while. I can talk all day about the haters, but when you are pulling their punk azzes out of a wrecked car. Or pulling some punk out of a stalled elevator, they resent your assistance, but they never say I will wait for a white man to help.

Hear! Hear!  Thank you Officer for what you said here and what you do!  I would pray that these dummies here that instigate, advocate or take the really high road of "I don't care one way or the other" will now re-evaluate their really tiny mind set.  To hate one man and his family for his wish to change, to try to help, to simply realign initiatives, to be of service is truly sad and speaks directly to their character and moral compass which is surely pointing south.  God Bless!

(but be reminded that your wise words of condemnation and caution may well fall on deaf dumb ears)

Re: See my comment on Brandenburg at #26.1 .

The Brandenburg case [immanency of harm requirement] notwithstanding as a Free Speech matter, there is federal statutory law making it a crime to threaten the President of the United States and successor (i.e. President-Elect) inter alia, punishable by fine and/or imprisonment.

[ See: U.S. Code: Title 18,871 - Threats against the President and Successors to the Presidency.]

                    http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00000871----000-.html

Persons can also be prosecuted under the Patriot Acts I and II that proscribe making real or idle terrorist threats.

The issue then is: Does the sign constitute a threat to the President-Elect?
